Anthony Jerry focuses on this process in Mexico's\u003cbr\u003eCosta Chica region in order to explore the relational aspects of citizenship\u003cbr\u003eand the place of Black people in how modern citizenship is imagined. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e  \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eJerry's study of the Costa Chica shows the political\u003cbr\u003estakes of the national project for Black recognition; the shared but competing\u003cbr\u003einterests of the Mexican government, activists, and townspeople; and the ways\u003cbr\u003ethat the state and NGOs are working to make \"Afro-Mexican\" an official cultural\u003cbr\u003ecategory. He argues that that the demand for recognition by Black communities calls\u003cbr\u003eattention to how the \u003ci\u003eMestizo\u003c\/i\u003e has become an intuitive point of reference\u003cbr\u003efor identifying who qualifies as \"other.\" Jerry also demonstrates that while\u003cbr\u003eofficial recognition can potentially empower African descendants, it can\u003cbr\u003esimultaneously reproduce the same logics of difference that have brought about\u003cbr\u003etheir social and political exclusion. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e  \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eOne of few books to center Blackness within a\u003cbr\u003ediscussion of Mexico or to incorporate a focus on Mexico into Black studies, \u003cbr\u003ethis book ultimately argues that the official project for recognition is itself\u003cbr\u003ea methodology of \u003ci\u003emestizaje\u003c\/i\u003e, an opportunity for the government to continue to use Blackness to\u003cbr\u003edefine the national subject and to further the Mexican national project. \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e  \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e  \u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003eA volume in the series New World Diasporas, edited by Kevin\u003cbr\u003eA.
