He attended the University of Maine at Orono. After working as a carpenter, a driver for a seafood wholesaler, and a ski instructor, he moved to France with his wife and began writing. He sold his first short story in 1994, and since then he has published more than 50 short stories, articles, and columns. After moving to Montreal, then settling in northern Vermont to become an innkeeper, he attended Goddard College, where he received an M.F.A. in creative writing.
