After graduating from St. Xavier's College, he had 5 years of post-graduate shipping education and work experience in London, UK, and Bremen, West Germany. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Ship=Brokers in London. After serving Ratnakar Shipping Company of K K Birla Group and then Sinclair Freight and Chartering for 6 years, he founded Himalaya Shipping Company in 1971. He left Himalaya Shipping in 1981 to start Capstan Shipping and Estate Company and pursued many innovative projects for port and shipping. He was also a state- and national-level table tennis player, winning the Bengal State Championship in 1959. Over the course of six decades, he played a major role in the development and growth of table tennis, particularly in sports at the state and national levels in India.
