He served charges in Beverly Hills, California (1934-1935), Westminster United Church in Winnipeg (1935-1948), and Bloor Street United Church in Toronto (1948-1970). He served as Moderator of the United Church of Canada (1964-1966). Howse was the author of several books and his journalism appeared in several major Canadian newspapers, including the \u003cem\u003eToronto Star\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eToronto Telegram\u003c\/em\u003e, the \u003cem\u003eWinnipeg Free Press\u003c\/em\u003e and \u003cem\u003eVictoria Sun-Times\u003c\/em\u003e.
