His early science fiction short stories were published in \u003ci\u003eGalaxy\u003c\/i\u003e magazine in 1952. He later began writing other works of fiction and published more than seventy short stories in many magazines, including \u003ci\u003eThe Saturday Evening Post\u003c\/i\u003e, \u003ci\u003eCosmopolitan\u003c\/i\u003e, and \u003ci\u003eRedbook\u003c\/i\u003e. His first novel, \u003ci\u003eThe Broken Place\u003c\/i\u003e, was published in 1968. But it was a simple family vacation to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in 1966 that gave him the inspiration for his greatest achievement, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel \u003ci\u003eThe Killer Angels\u003c\/i\u003e, published in 1974.
