A white middle class English teacher on the brink of crossing a boundary and calling herself a racist; and a young black girl at a crossroads. She must battle to escape poverty and violence or surrender to it. Both women one young the other entering middle age and ostensibly with different lives engage in an emotional battle that finally ends in a surprising discovery about each other.
