In this compact but far-reaching work, Kuhn proposes that the alphabet is more than a practical collection of signs representing the sounds of human speech. He argues that the forms, sounds, numerical values, and arrangement of its letters preserve fragments of an ancient symbolic system—a concealed structure through which earlier initiates expressed ideas concerning cosmology, creation, spiritual evolution, and the relationship between consciousness and matter.

According to Kuhn, the sages of antiquity embedded their teachings not only within scriptures, myths, rituals, architecture, mathematics, music, and sacred drama, but within language itself. The alphabet thus becomes a miniature map of the creative process: unity dividing into polarity, spirit descending into material existence, consciousness passing through cycles of manifestation, and life ultimately returning toward its spiritual source.

Kuhn examines individual letters as ideographic and cosmological symbols. The upright I becomes an image of primordial unity; A represents that unity dividing into the dual powers of spirit and matter; U or V traces a descent and return; O suggests undifferentiated being, space, or the unmanifest; and X expresses the crossing, division, and interaction of opposing creative currents.

The work ranges across Egyptian symbolism, Hebrew and Greek letters, Pythagorean number philosophy, the Kabbalah, the Zohar, biblical language, divine names, gematria, sound, vibration, and the numerical foundations of sacred literature. Kuhn presents letters and numbers as closely related vehicles of meaning, proposing that ancient words were constructed to carry intellectual, symbolic, and numerical significance simultaneously.

The Esoteric Structure of the Alphabet should be approached not as a conventional history of writing or modern linguistic study, but as an occult and philosophical interpretation of language. It offers a striking meditation on the possibility that the most ordinary instruments of communication may contain traces of a forgotten sacred science.
