by Donald H. Dyal (Author)

San Francisco, California was the epicenter of late 19th and 20th century canning operations in Alaska. Chief among these was the Alaska Packers Association which in its prime canned more salmon than any company in the world. This book is an interpretive history of the rise, flourishing, then demise of this giant. Also, the Alaska Packers owned the largest sailing fleet ever assembled. The Fleet List is the most accurate listing of the vessels owned and operated by the Alaska Packers extant. Filled with stories, history, triumph and tragedy, this book describes the most important industry after lumber on the West Coast of America in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
